Perth (locally, ['perth] [help*info], Scottish Gaelic Peairt [pherGStj]), [3][4]) is a city located in central Scotland on the banks of River Tay. It is both the administrative center of Perth and Kinross and the historic county of Perthshire. In 2018, it had 47,430 inhabitants. [1]

Since prehistoric times, Perth has had a settlement. It is a natural mound that has been raised slightly above the floodplain of the Tay. This place allows for the river to be crossed by foot at low tide. It is believed that the area around the city has been occupied since Mesolithic hunter/gatherers arrived more than 8,000 year ago. The Neolithic circles and standing stones near the city date back to 4,000 BC, which is the period following the introduction of agriculture in the area.

Close to Perth is Scone Abbey, which formerly housed the Stone of Scone (also known as the Stone of Destiny), on which the King of Scots were traditionally crowned. This enhanced the early importance of the city, and Perth became known as a 'capital' of Scotland due to the frequent residence there of the royal court. Royal burgh status was given to the city by King William the Lion in the early 12th century. The city became one of the richest burghs in the country, engaging in trade with France, the Low Countries, and the Baltic countries, and importing goods such as Spanish silk and French wine.
