The Institute for Catalan Studies, also known as the acronym IEC, is an academic institution that conducts research into \"all elements\" of Catalan culture. It is located in Barcelona, Catalonia.

The IEC is best known for its work in standardizing Catalan. Joandomenec Ros Aragones is the current president of the Institute. He was elected for four-years in 2013, and will be reelected for a second term. This follows Salvador Giner who was elected for four-years in 2005 and a second term. Barcelona is the capital of Catalonia and second-largest city in Spain.

Enric Prat de la Riba was to be the first President of The Commonwealth of Catalonia. He signed the founding document of this Institute as the president of the Provincial Deputation of Barcelona, on June 17, 1907. [1] The IEC was one of a variety of scientific and cultural institutions that were created to give greater prestige to Catalan culture and language. Prat de la Riba founded also the Escola del Administracio Local (School of Local Administration), to help create a group of Catalan civil servants in the regional government.

In 1922, the Union Academique Internationale admitted the IEC to its ranks. This was shortly after the institution of the former. [2]
