El Consell de Síndics de l'Acadèmia Americana d'Oftalmologia està profundament preocupat per l'impacte de les recents sentències del Tribunal Suprem i les accions legislatives adoptades per estats individuals, que interfereixen en la relació entre metge i pacient i limiten l'accés dels pacients a una atenció sanitària de qualitat i equitativa. .

Some members of the Academy have asked that its meetings be moved to states where the political decisions might not align with their values. There is, however, little evidence to suggest that boycotting meetings will lead to meaningful legislative changes. The boycotts have a greater impact on the local economy, including the employees of the convention centers, hotels, restaurants, and other meeting vendors.

Per a la conferència anual de l'Acadèmia, es necessita una gran quantitat d'habitacions d'hotel i espai de reunions per acollir més de 20,000 assistents. Els centres de convencions i hotels signen contractes amb una antelació mínima de 10 anys.
