Food and beverage manufacturing accounts for almost a quarter (25%) of the total Scottish manufacturing revenue and 30% of all manufacturing employment. Food and drink manufacturing accounts for 71% of Scotland’s total supply chain turnover, and employs over a third.More than 1,000 food and beverage manufacturing companies are located in Scotland, with 95% of them classified as small businesses. The top 100 food and beverage manufacturers in Scotland are ranked from William Grant & Sons, Diageo Scotland and Lees Foods, ranked first and second respectively with turnovers exceeding PS1.1 billion to the 100th place Lees Foods, a bakery with a PS19.7million turnover (source: Scotland Food & Drink).Scotch Whisky is a key part of the Scottish food and beverage manufacturing industry, directly employing over 10,000 people, including 7,000 rural workers. In fact, Scotch Whisky export sales of PS4.7 billion accounted for the majority of Scottish food and beverage exports worth PS5.8 billion. Other sectors of the Scottish food and beverage industry, such as seafood, baking, brewing, and soft drinks, are also flourishing. The Scottish Government has committed to making Scotland a leader in the world of sustainable, high-quality food and drinks by facilitating investments in science and innovation.The Food & Drink Show, which is part of the Manufacturing & Supply Chain Conference & Exhibition at the SEC Glasgow from the 23rd – 24th October, 2024, will highlight key trends and challenges in the industry. These include productivity issues resulting from labour shortages and skills shortages as well as barriers to investment and innovation, and uncertainty around Brexit. The Food & Drink Manufacturing Show offers practical advice to overcome these obstacles.
